THE CYNIC: OPERATION GUINEA PIG
A comic strip with possibly a hidden analogy--or maybe it's too damn obvious.

I drew this Cynic special comic back in 2003 as I was trying to figure out the politics of the Iraq War. It's not easy to make up your mind on these issues when you're being misinformed. On one hand you want to oust a brutal dick like Saddam and create a utopia based on Western capitalism; and then on the other hand you don't want to cause civilian casualties, a civil war and a backlash against America in general.
Now we're stuck in this mess. In the end I don't think you can export democracy at the point of a gun. It just doesn't work. When a group of people want freedom they will fight for it. If Iraqis truly wanted freedom from Saddam, I think they would have won it for themselves--otherwise that freedom is not really theirs if it is handed to them. It's like a homeless man being handed a million dollars. If you didn't earn the money you won't know what to do with it. You'll go party with your friends and blow the dough until you're homeless again. Freedom, I believe, has to be fought for by those who want it. Not thrust upon those who don't. Not that we can't give aid in some manner, but in general freedom is squandered by those who never cared about it in the first place.
And in the end, we weren't supposed to liberate Iraq. We were supposed to protect ourselves from WMD's. There was no threat to our security. What a waste of lives and money.
